About this class
Modern Dance at The Village School of Dance
Modern dancing is a highly energetic style that adapts with the changing fashion in dance. It can be performed to many types of music, including contemporary, lyrical, blues, jazz, isolations, musical theatre and commercial work.
The whole body is used to tell a story or depict an idea. Travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns mean modern dancers need to be fit, flexible and strong. Modern technique is derived from classical ballet, so we strongly recommend weekly ballet alongside higher-level modern.
Most jazz and tap classes follow the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance syllabus; some also involve free work. Junior modern classes are filled with routines danced to songs from High School Musical to Mamma Mia!
